Doula comes from the Greek word doulos, meaning servant or one who gives herself up to another's will.

We consider ourselves as servants of this dyad - birth-giver and baby.  One cannot separate an unborn baby from a pregnant person. They are two parts of a whole.  When a mother is incarcerated, so is her baby.
